Howdy folks! It’s time for another edition of Rector: I Hardly Knew Her; an Introspective Look into the History of the Erector Set! Or rather, a little ditty about Legacy.
This week we’re gonna take a look at two fun little lists both tied together by one card. That card? Academy Rector!
Academy Rector is always just waiting in the wings to be busted wide open. As Wizards continues to print hellaciously stupid overcosted enchantments that do very mean things, Rector continues to be a card that fetches those enchantments essentially for free. That being said, in a world of Deathrite Shaman this does get a little hairy sometimes. But when it pays off, it pays off.

This list was a little nutty when we cooked it up, based on a list that played Trinket Mages and Mask of the Mimic. We decided to add Intuition and Unburial Rites in order to pull out a Rector quickly and efficiently. In the sideboard, for spell-based combo matchups we get access to things like Decree of Silence + Solemnity (which is absurd), as well as things like an extra Mentor and a couple Jaces so we can kind of play a generic UW control gig. Force Bubble + Solemnity is also a little amusing.
The list seemed fun enough, so I’m taking it to our local proxy event for grins. I also played around with it a bit on XMage and had a blast with it.
The second list that I’ve been poking at a bit this past week is a hot take on the Nyx Fit variant of Nic Fit. Nyx Fit is a variant of the deck that uses Academy Rector to dump into one of the big four lock pieces: Overwhelming Splendor, Dovescape, Curse of Death’s Hold, and Cruel Reality. The deck has traditionally played Evolutionary Leap as a way to dig through the deck, finding Rectors due to a low creature count. But what if we instead played Eladamri’s Call?

As you can see, this list is a lot different than the one above. First off, it’s not playing blue. But we also get access to some extreme hate sideboard cards like Gaddock Teeg and Kambal. Since Eladamri’s Call is instant speed, in post-board games we can put Teeg or Kambal into the hand on an end step to get them into play almost immediately. The deck also gets to play more creatures in general, so it has some access to beaters like Sun Titan (this is gross with Pernicious Deed) and Sigarda, Host of Herons as ways to pivot the game quickly if need be.
Both pretty fun and powerful lists. I’d like to do more with Academy Rector shells down the line, because the card is just too absurdly fun.
That’s all the time we got this week folks! Do you have a favorite card in Legacy that you’d like to see me try to build complete jank around? Let me know, and we’ll play it next time on Bob the Builder: Can We Actually Fix It?!
