Eric has been an avid Magic fan and player since re-discovering the game in 2012. He is a Red mage at heart but likes to confuse himself with the varying decision trees presented by mid-range and control decks from time to time. Eric plays mostly casually with his 9-year-old daughter, but manages to get out for every prerelease and a few FNM's and GP's every year. Guilds of Ravnica Pro Tour Recap

Welcome back to the Strictly Standard Meta Report. This week we FINALLY get the Pro Tour to help solidify decklists and define the meta for the next two months of Standard play.  With 510 competitors sleeving up decks to battle it out through 10 rounds of Standard and 6 rounds of Guilds of Ravnica draft, we were sure to see a diverse representation of decks battling it out to claim the crown of Tier 1 deck.  Would it be the boogeyman Golgari midrange that defies the bulls-eye of sideboard, and sometimes even main-deck, hate that every other deck will be

GRN Standard Week 5 – The Eve of the Pro Tour

Welcome back to the Strictly Standard Meta Report.  This Guilds of Ravnica format has been quite the roller coaster.  We started with aggressive decks setting the pace, and ended up getting midrange Golgari decks that preyed on those with an onslaught of two-for-one threats to swing the format in a slower direction.  Then the control decks AND the aggressive decks adopted some great technology like to nullify the Golgari gameplan, and we are now in a place where it is really anyone’s game.  Now, with another week in the books, we are on the doorstep of Pro Tour Atlanta. There

GRN Standard Week 4 – Settle Down Now

Welcome back to my weekly Standard meta update report. As we check in on the results of the Magic Online Standard Competitive 5-0 postings, last weekend’s Start City Games Classic at Charlotte, and the double GP weekend with Standard main events (shockingly the FIRST WotC sponsored major Standard tournament of the season), we are truly seeing the meta settle into its groove. The Thursday, October 25th Magic Online Competitive Standard League 5-0 decklist post only had 35 lists, down 12.5% from the week before. And with only 17 of those containing a maindeck Planeswalker, the first time that figure has

Guilds of Ravnica – New Standard, New Brews

Hi and welcome back to Part 4 of my review of the archetypes I expect will come out of this Standard rotation.  Guilds of Ravnica has brought a ton of new and interesting cards into the format; more importantly, it also kicked a bunch of old and oppressive cards out of the format as well.  No longer are we beholden to the sets of Standard past. With a reduced card pool to select from we are now freed to explore the depths of recent sets that were too underpowered, or just didn’t have the right support.  New sets and new
